KINGSWOOD HISTORICAL SOCIETY  Contact Sheila Alexander, The Old Plume 843398 or alexplume@freeuk.com

Andrew Harper's talk and bell-ringing exhibition at St Mary's Wotton proved to be a highly entertaining event that was thoroughly enjoyed by members.  We still have a few places available on the Medieval Study Day in Gloucester Cathedral on Saturday 17 May, which will explore the lives of Gloucester's Benedictine monks from 400 AD - 1540.  It will include visiting parts of the cathedral not normally seen by visitors such as the Infirmary, Herbarium and Abbey Mill.  The cost is £15 to include coffee on arrival and a light lunch.  It is open to our members and non-members alike (but is thought not suitable for anyone who has difficulty climbing stairs).  For further details and to book your place please contact Sheila Alexander on 843398 or email alexplume@freeuk.com.

KINGSWOOD ABBEY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE

On March 11th John Dixon of Tewkesbury Historical Society talked to us about the war years around the area when the G.I’s were in town! A very interesting evening.

Next month will be an open evening when Chris and Francis Jones will enlighten us on belonging to the Sealed Knot, living and enacting battles of the 17th century. Please join us on April 8th, 7.30pm in the village hall.

ST MARY'S PARISH CHURCH - Viv K.The Rectory, Charfield. 01454261751

NEWS FROM ST. MARY'S

Work is continuing at a pace. The lights are up, the ceiling's painted, the walls are on their way and some of the wooden screen is in place. We have received anonymous donations towards the cost of the glass and the engraving of that glass. We're very grateful to those people and to the team who are overseeing the works. When the room is ready we shall have one or two 'opening' events to show our appreciation to all who have contributed and of course, you are welcome to come and look around... the church is open daily from 9 until 6.

There have been many suggestions for what could 'go on' in the new Room and it's important to stress that we are NOT in competition with the village hall. Our activities will fill a gap rather than take away from the established groups.

Easter is here again and it's strange this year with it being so early. We have the Easter weekend with the children off school for just 2 days...Good Friday and Easter Monday, and then they go back until their end of term. If only Easter could be a fixed time! We hope to see many of you at the Easter Egg hunt... but you may be reading this after the event...so if you came along, I hope you went home with chocolate eggs!!!

We recently held a Thanksgiving service for Maureen Kirkham. She'd been a stalwart member of the church congregation and the community for many years and we shall miss her.

The children's choir continues to sing with us and we look forward to new members anytime. Practices are at 3.00 on Thursdays, in church. There is a Confirmation coming up in October and if anyone would like to come along to our discussion groups .... whether or not you feel Confirmation is right for you...please get in touch with me, or one of the team at St Mary's for more details. I know that since last writing for the Grapevine some of you have experienced nasty problems in your houses following the rain and its knock-on effects. I hope you are now 'sorted' and that it won’t happen again! I try to spend some time each week wandering the village or chatting over a hot chocolate. Do stop me and chat if you see me or join me for a drink. May Easter bring many things... new life, new hope and new weather... including sunshine.

(The team is Bob Copeland, Pete Nicholas, David Hatton and Gill Hatton.)

The Village Diary can be viewed on the Grapevine website. For an entry please email Grapevine or telephone Gill on 842734.
